Exoscale Switzerland Geneva Intel Xeon CPU Optimized Cloud Hosting Test and Review

We checked out Exoscale‘s Geneva, Switzerland, CPU-optimized cloud server (Plan: Extra-Large). It runs on an Intel Xeon Processor (Skylake) with impressive specs: 8-core CPU, 16 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD storage, a 10 Gbps internet port, and one IPv4 address.

In our review, we conducted various tests to measure its performance. We started with the Basic Benchmark, Yabs, and Unix Benchmark to check its capabilities. We ran the Global Node Test to gauge network speeds from different locations. The Global Ping Test helped us understand latency levels.

Additionally, we explored media accessibility through The Media Unlock Test and assessed connection quality with the CloudFlare Internet Test. For insights on web performance, we turned to PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix.

About Exoscale

Exoscale, a member of A1 Digital International GmbH, is a European Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform that offers a wide range of services to build and scale applications. It’s a privacy-minded platform that provides on-demand resources.

Let’s start with Exoscale’s Compute service. It offers high-performance SSD cloud servers. These servers are self-sustained zones for resilient deployments. They also provide snapshots and custom templates. You can manage groups of machines using Instance Pools. They also offer anti-affinity groups, IAM, and organization management.

Exoscale also offers a fully managed Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS). It supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, Apache Kafka, OpenSearch, and Redis® databases. It also offers managed Grafana. It’s GDPR compliant.

The Object Storage service is highly available and offers multi-redundancy. It provides low latency, high bandwidth, and public or private secure HTTP(s) access. It’s S3 compatible for simple tooling integration. Exoscale’s Block Storage offers ultra-low latency for high-performance workloads. You can attach multiple volumes per instance. It’s highly available and uses NVME-based architecture with multiple copies of data.

They also offer GPU Servers. You can choose from 1 to 8 NVIDIA GPU cards. It offers direct passthrough access for maximum performance. It has all the advantages of a regular computing server.

Exoscale’s Networking service offers dual 25 Gbps secure private networking. You can manage firewall rules using security groups. It also offers a Network Load Balancer, Elastic IP addresses, and IPv6 for instances. You can also use Virtual Private Cloud.

Admin Control Panel

Exoscale’s admin control portal is the central hub for managing your cloud infrastructure. It’s designed to be user-friendly, making it easy for you to navigate and control your resources.

One of the key features of the Admin Control Portal is the ability to create organizations. Organizations are essentially team workspaces where different users can operate on a common account with their billing. This feature is particularly useful for businesses where the owner can grant rights to their technical staff to operate on machines while the accounting department handles billing concerns.

The portal also allows you to switch contexts between organizations. This is done by clicking on the account name dropdown on the upper right of the portal. This feature provides flexibility and control, especially when managing multiple organizations.

Adding and managing users in your organization is another important feature of the Admin Control Portal. Only users with the OWNER role can manage user memberships in an organization. You can add users to an organization from the IAM section in the portal’s main navigation.

When inviting users, you can select a user role from the following options: OWNER, TECH, and ADMIN. Each role has different rights and responsibilities.

Payments

Exoscale supports three major currencies: CHF, EUR, and USD. They accept Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards that support 3D Secure payment verification. Additionally, they accept PayPal, but only in Pre-Paid Mode.

Exoscale offers two primary billing modes: pre-paid and post-paid.

In the pre-paid billing mode, you add funds to your organization before consuming resources. When your organization’s balance reaches zero, the organization is suspended. Therefore, keeping the credit in your account topped up is crucial to avoid suspension.

On the other hand, in post-paid billing, you can consume resources freely. Every month, Exoscale automatically charges your default credit card for the amount you have consumed. Established companies with a proven line of credit can request access to post-paid billing with wire transfers after a manual vetting process.

In this case, Exoscale will invoice your company every month. Please note that wire invoices are not automatically charged to your bank account. You must manually pay wire invoices within ten days after the invoice date.

If you want to change your billing mode, you can do so by contacting their support team. For instance, in pre-paid billing mode, you can move to post-paid by credit card mode by registering a credit card in the Credit Card Management view.

Customer Support

Exoscale offers four support plans: Built-In, Starter, Pro, and Enterprise. Each plan is designed to cater to different needs and includes varying features.

The Built-In plan is for all customers and is perfect for testers, developers, and non-critical applications. It offers best-effort response time during office hours. You can open and track tickets within the portal.

The Starter plan is designed for startups and SMEs running production infrastructures. It includes everything from the Built-In plan, a four-hour guaranteed response time, additional authentication options, and detailed usage reporting.

The Pro and Enterprise plans will be available soon. The Pro plan offers a one-hour response time and out-of-the-box services to detect and track events on the platform. The Enterprise plan offers a response time of 30 minutes (24/7), support via ticket, phone, or chat, and a dedicated Customer Success Manager.

Email and phone are two main options for non-customers to contact the Exoscale support team. If you’re a customer, your best bet is to log in to your client portal and send a support ticket.
