DigitalOcean United States New York Dedicated CPU-Optimized Droplets Test and Review

We recently tested DigitalOcean‘s Dedicated CPU-optimized droplets in New York, USA, which run on an Intel Xeon Platinum 8168 CPU @ 2.70GHz. The server has 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM, 25 GB SSD storage, a 1 Gbps internet port, 4 TB traffic capacity, and 1 IPv4 address.

Our review covers several tests:

  • Basic Benchmark, Yabs, and Unix Benchmark for performance metrics.
  • Global Node Test for network speeds from different locations.
  • Global Ping Test for measuring latency.
  • Media Unlock Test to check media access.
  • CloudFlare Internet Test for connection quality.
  • Web performance evaluations using PageSpeed Insights and GTmetrix.

About DigitalOcean

DigitalOcean Droplets are scalable compute platforms with add-on storage, security, and monitoring capabilities. Think of them as mini-cloud servers ready to handle your web applications, databases, and backend services.

Why Choose DigitalOcean Droplets?

Firstly, DigitalOcean Droplets offer simplicity. You can create a Droplet in less than a minute. Yes, you read that right. You can have your server up and running in less time than it takes to brew coffee.

Secondly, Droplets are highly customizable. You can choose from a variety of configurations to suit your needs. Whether you need a small, cost-effective setup for your blog or a high-performance configuration for your resource-intensive application, Droplets has covered you.

Thirdly, Droplets provide scalability. As your application grows, so can your Droplet. You can easily resize your Droplet to handle increased traffic and demand—no need to worry about outgrowing your server.

Getting Started with DigitalOcean Droplets

Starting with DigitalOcean Droplets is as easy as one, two, or three. First, you create and configure your Droplet. You can choose your operating system, plan, and data center region. You can also add SSH keys for security.

Next, you deploy your application. You can use the built-in console or connect via SSH. You can also use DigitalOcean’s one-click apps to deploy pre-configured software stacks.

Finally, you manage and monitor your Droplet. DigitalOcean provides a user-friendly control panel and a powerful API. You can also enable monitoring and alerts to keep track of your Droplet’s performance and usage.

Payments

DigitalOcean offers a variety of payment methods to cater to a global audience. They accept major credit cards such as Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, UnionPay, Diners Club, and JCB. In addition to these, they also accept payments through third-party providers like PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay.

Billing Cycle and Payment Due Dates

DigitalOcean operates on a monthly billing cycle. Your account balance accumulates over the calendar month based on your resource usage. The balance is due on the first day of each month. However, the balance may be due for new accounts when your usage exceeds a predetermined threshold.

Making a Payment

You can make a payment at any time during the month. This allows you to pay for your month-to-date resource usage before it’s due, pay an overdue balance, or make a pre-payment. When your balance is due, DigitalOcean first applies any pre-payments and then automatically charges the primary payment method on your account for the remaining balance.

Conclusion

In our basic benchmark tests, the I/O speeds were excellent, averaging 516.7 MB/s over three runs, indicating strong disk performance. The upload and download speeds showed impressive results with minimal latency, especially for US locations.

The Yabs performance tests provided mixed results. While the block size tests (512k and 1m) achieved good read and write speeds, smaller block sizes (4k and 64k) were less impressive. The overall disk speed was satisfactory but not outstanding.

The Geekbench 6 benchmark results showed a strong single-core performance with a score of 1136, considered good. However, the multi-core score of 1390 was closer to the standard, highlighting room for improvement in handling multi-threaded tasks.

The UnixBench results confirmed solid CPU performance, particularly in file copy operations and shell script execution. The benchmark index scores reflected above-average overall system performance.

In conclusion, DigitalOcean’s Dedicated CPU-optimized droplets in New York deliver reliable performance, excellent I/O speeds, and strong single-core processing power. While there’s room to optimize disk performance for smaller block sizes and multi-core tasks, the server’s overall capabilities make it a solid choice for various computing needs.
